Prologue to Works
As a textile artist, I have become intrigued by the nature of thread and fibre. Appreciation of the gentle rhythms and beauty of patterns that can be sewn in, as well as the moments of frustration - knots and ladders that inevitably occur during the process.
After weaving and constructing fabrics for well over twenty years, I still find myself
un-picking stitches made, reworking the narratives - pausing to re-imagine creations for the future. Whether it's urgently rescuing a dropped stitch or darning a hole that's appeared after wear years later, I've discovered that this creative practice grounds some of the experiences of the human soul, in its own mysterious construction and being, re-collection and unravelling.
Many of us find ourselves at times between warp and weft. Indeed life's disruptions, in all their curious forms, continually call out and invite us into liminal places that graciously reveal our lack of experience, knowledge or understanding of life.
Equally terrifying as they can be exhilarating, these moments can be both painful and beautiful transfigurations. For amidst the blindness, we surrender to the tension and become aware that the only real certainty is the unknown.
It is the journey of unravelling unknowns that prompted a series of textile pieces that are alongside the poetry printed within the pages. Nothing has been added to the original form, only threads pulled from warp and weft to reveal various impressions found deeper within the knitted fibres.
What started off as one piece of woven fabric has since become a collection of twenty deconstructed 'skins'; unique landscapes cut from the same cloth... In weaving words as well as matter, the collection of poems likewise form expressions that were birthed from encountering uncharted territory. Of pulling away from familiar mindsets, deconstructing belief systems and structures... hints of invitations that brought playfulness, as well as trepidation.
Pulling Threads is a collection of questions; impressions of the unseen. It is practice in continual process - aesthetic dialogues that illuminate our limited perception of an ever inclusive and expansive fabric of being.
